Obituary for Verdine L. Hassemer

Verdine L. Hassemer, age 86, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at MCHS in Bloomer. She was born March 25, 1929 in Bloomer to Herbert and Mary (Kolmer) Sarauer. She married Edward V. Hassemer on October 12, 1948 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Bloomer. She was a domestic engineer, managing her household and family as well as being a waitress at Barthen’s Café until the café changed hands. Verdine had a strong faith and was active in the PCCW, the Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She was a chocolate connoisseur and because of her sweet tooth she became a “culinary expert” in the field of baking. She also enjoyed making dumplings, canning, playing solitaire, solving crosswords, the occasional trip to the casino and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by four children: Thomas E. Hassemer of Bloomer, Mark A. Hassemer of Bloomer, Marcia (Jim) Avakian of Phoenix AZ and Leanne M. Hassemer of Eau Claire; grandchildren: Tammy (Gary) Hanley, Jessica (Clint) Hooppaw, Dustin (Chanda) Hassemer, Adrienne (Brandon) Avakian-Anthony; great-grandchildren: Amanda Hanley, Darin Hanley, Sydney Hooppaw, Bella Hassemer, Gavin Hassemer; brother: Herb (Margaret) Sarauer of Chippewa Falls; sisters-in-law: Gail Sarauer of Rockford IL and Rita Hassemer of Chetek.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Herbert and Mary; husband: Edward; son: Daniel Lee Hassemer; brother: Gerald Sarauer; sister Marion Jacobson

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Bloomer with Father John and Deacon Dick officiating. There will be a visitation from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Church on Tuesday the 29th. Interment will be in the North Catholic Cemetery. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is assisting the family.
