Shirley Ferstenou, 90, passed away April 21, 2018 after a year-long struggle with cancer. Born to Iver and Mary Anderson, she grew up in Bloomer, graduated from BHS and married Edward Ferstenou in 1947.
In addition to raising three children, Shirley worked out of the home many years colorizing family farm photos for National Air Photos and also colorizing graduation and family portraits for individuals. After Ed died in 1977, she worked several years at Price Rite Foods.
Shirley enjoyed and appreciated many friendships that evolved from her volunteer jobs: U.S. Air Force Ground Observer Corps in the 1950s (earning her wings); 15 years at St. John’s Lutheran Church working with children and serving as the Sunday School Superintendent for 7 of those; 25 years at Maplewood nursing home; and many years with the Senior Citizens Center in Bloomer where she served on the Board of Directors several times and worked with the “card ladies” recycling greeting cards.
Feeding and watching birds, reading, tending to her flowers, writing letters, and listening to country music were favorite hobbies.
Preceding her in death were her parents and husband; sisters Florence, Helen, Lenore, and Lorraine. Surviving her are: Sons Richard, Larry (Kris) and daughter Shari (Bob); brother Roger; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family thanks the staff at Atrium and Mayo Clinic Health & Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
Memorials may be designated for the Bloomer Senior Citizens Center.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer; visitation at 10 a.m. at the church before the service. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at olsonfuneralhomebloomer.com.
