Philip Charles Hoyer, age 81, passed away Friday, December 26, 2008 at his home. He was born May 27, 1927 in Fridley MN to Charles H. & Hazel (Noyes) Hoyer. At age 17, Philip joined the Merchant Marines, spending two years in the Pacific. When he came home, he finished high school and went on to the University of Minnesota, graduating with a journalism degree. He married Joanne Thompson in 1950 and they had two children, Denise & Brian. After their divorce, he married Lois Griesse in 1958 and they had three daughters: Diane, Karen & Jennifer. He received his master’s degree in Public Health Education in 1960 and worked for the United States Public Health System from 1960 until 1962. He and his family moved to Madison in 1962 where Philip worked for the Wisconsin Department of Health. In 1973, they moved to Bloomer and for the next 25 years he wrote articles for the Bloomer Advance and the Chippewa Herald Telegram. He enjoyed writing feature articles for the newspapers, photography, listening to Big Band Music, going to the movies and watching college football.
He is survived by his wife: Lois of Bloomer; one son: Brian Hoyer of Greencastle IN; four daughters: Denise (Bruce) Harvey of Greenfield IN, Diane (James) Froiland of Greenfield IN, Karen (Richard) Nowak of Saukville WI & Jennifer (Pete)
Van Kauwenbergh of Eau Claire; five grandsons: Jeffrey (Cindy) Houser, Shawn (Amanda) Houser, Jon (Allison) Houser, Rev. Brandon Froiland & Chris Froiland; one cousin: John (Doris) Zesbaugh of Evergreen CO, 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer with Rev. Bruce Rimmereid officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer.
