John E. Stanford, a devoted husband and father, skilled craftsman, and lover of the outdoors, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 22, 2025 at his home on Chain Lake at the age of 82.
John was born on July, 9 1942 to Jack and Violet (Ulness) Stanford in Eau Claire, WI. He spent his life as an upholsterer, a trade he learned in the U.S. Navy. He repaired and enhanced furniture for many homes around the Eau Claire area, and received commendations from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire for the efficiency he brought to their furniture program during his 26 year tenure.
After retirement in 2003, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a deep love for fishing, spending countless hours on the Winnipeg River in Ontario, and Chain Lake near New Auburn, WI. He also had a talent for woodworking, creating pieces that reflected both his skill and his heart. When he wasn’t woodworking or fishing, John enjoyed relaxing with a good movie or a good cut of prime rib.
John married Judith Bauer on October 10, 1963 in Eau Claire Wisconsin and together they raised two sons. John is survived by his wife of over 61 years: Judy of New Auburn, sons: John W (Yayla) Stanford of Issaquah, WA and Peter D. (Paula) Stanford of Oneida, WI; one grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends around the world. He is preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and other staff members of the Mayo Clinic Health System for there loving care.
Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider donating to Mayo Clinic in honor of John at give.mayoclinic.org.
