Joel K. Vettrus

Joel K. Vettrus, age 79, of Bloomer, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening, October 2, 2024, and is now in the arms of his heavenly father.

 Joel was born on December 16, 1944, in Minneapolis, MN to Rev. Ole and Clara (Olson) Vettrus. At a young age, the family moved to Superior, WI until he was in 5th grade, then graduated from Colfax High School as an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Joel honorably served in the US Army from 1963 until 1965 in Germany and then graduated from UW Eau Claire with a bachelors degree in art education.

 On August 22, 1970, he married Gloria J. Schmock, in Bloomer. Joel worked in Vocational Rehab for the State of Wisconsin for 33 years as a small business instructor. He enjoyed hobbies such as, woodworking, fishing and going to concerts. Joel was an avid sports fan, being a lifelong New York Yankees fan with Mickey Mantle as his idol. 

 He is survived by his children: Christian Vettrus of Milwaukee, Jodi (Sam) Rubenzer of Waconia, MN and Erica (Ryan) Champlin of La Crosse; 8 grandchildren: Avery, Emily and Jayce Hunter, Emma, Maddie and Jake Rubenzer, and Christopher and Ethan Champlin; brothers: David, Jerome and Rev. Timothy Vettrus; and sisters: Donna Olson and Rhoda Rubey. 

 He was preceded in death by his wife: Gloria Vettrus in 2022; parents: Rev. Ole and Clara Vettrus; brother: Rev. Richard Vettrus; and sister: Jean Spahn.

 A private family service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Bloomer Cemetery. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at olsonfuneralhomebloomer.com
